How Liposuction Has Evolved For Better & Safer Results

Like many other cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction has come a long way over the years. Advancements in techniques have allowed plastic surgeons to remove excess fat more efficiently and safely shape the body.

These developments have led to a body contouring procedure that offers benefits including:

  • Excess fat removal
  • Improved overall body shape
  • Improved overall health
  • Lower chance of weight-related issues including heart disease and stroke
  • Improved self-esteem

At our Kelowna private clinic, our board-certified plastic surgeons are skilled and experienced in the latest liposuction techniques and can help you safely and quickly reach all your aesthetic goals.

How Liposuction Techniques Have Improved Over the Years

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures for removing excess fat deposits. While it has always been a safe & effective procedure, the technologies and tools used by plastic surgeons to perform liposuction have drastically improved.

1. No More General Anesthetic

Today, new liposuction procedures can give you the incredible results you desire with fewer risks and shorter recovery times. One of the ways it does this is by eliminating the need for general anesthesia.

Using the tumescent technique for liposuction, a large volume of dilute local anesthetic solution (lidocaine and epinephrine) is injected into the fat beneath the skin, causing the treatment area to become tumescent (swollen and firm.)

This provides such a complete local anesthesia that it eliminates the need for any general anesthesia or IV sedation.

BENEFITS OF THE TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION TECHNIQUE

Not only has the tumescent technique proven to be safer than older liposuction techniques which require general anesthesia, it:

  • Is less painful
  • Has minimized post-operative recovery time
  • Produces optimal cosmetic results

2. Customized treatments

To safely and effectively remove fat during a liposuction procedure, your plastic surgeon will use a tool called a cannula - a thin, hollow tube that, when attached to the vacuum pump, sucks out fat.

Today, there are numerous different types and sizes of liposuction cannula, and, depending on your treatment area, aesthetic goals and specific requirements, they can be specialized for your particular procedure.

Prior to any treatment, it’s helpful to understand the different types of cannula and what they are optimized for, so that you and your plastic surgeon can make the most beneficial body contouring decision.

4. Improved skin appearance

Using minimally invasive ultrasound technology for precision body contouring, new liposuction techniques are able to provide dramatic results in just one procedure. Using ultrasound waves, this technology selectively breaks up small or large areas of fat while leaving the surrounding skin safe and intact.

Have loose or sagging skin?

This is a common concern for many liposuction patients. A breakthrough body contouring procedure, this advanced technique will simultaneously reduce stubborn fat while tightening and firming your skin.

5. Enhancement of other features

A technique known as water-assisted liposuction is becoming increasingly popular as it allows plastic surgeons to remove  unwanted fat with less trauma and bruising. This in turn allows the fat to be harvested for any facial fat grafting procedures a patient may want.

Facial fat grafting is an innovative and effective anti-aging procedure that uses a patient’s own fat to plump up aging facial areas and can be used to treat many concerns including:

  • Unwanted fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Sunken areas of the face (lips and cheeks)

Working with a board-certified plastic surgeon can ensure the fat is harvested successfully from your liposuction treatment and then used to give you a healthier glow, restoring and rejuvenating what the added years have taken away.
