What to Expect From a Cosmetic Chin Surgery

Chin implant surgery is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to improve the contours of your neck, chin, and jawline. Here’s everything you need to know about chin augmentation and how it can help you achieve a naturally attractive balance between facial features.

Chin implants are a popular cosmetic surgery option for men or women who feel that their chin is not as defined as they would like, or that it lacks proportion to the rest of their face. Your plastic surgeon might recommend implants to:

  • Correct a recessed or otherwise weak chin
  • Increase the prominence of the chin bone and reduce the appearance of a double chin
  • Improve jawline and neck definition
  • Bring the chin into proportion with other facial features for a more balanced appearance

Chin implants come in a wide range of contours and sizes to suit any patient and when you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, they can use this surgery to transform your facial appearance.

Your Total Guide to a Cosmetic Chin Surgery Procedure

If you are bothered by a recessed or ‘weak’ chin, or you feel that your facial features lack proportion, cosmetic chin implant surgery can help correct any concerns you might have and help you feel more confident in your appearance.

From what to expect from a chin augmentation consultation to planning for your recovery, here is your total guide to a chin surgery:

Your Chin Augmentation Consultation

The first step to any chin augmentation surgery is a consultation with your plastic surgeon. During this appointment, your plastic surgeon will:

  • Examine your chin and the proportions of your face
  • Discuss your aesthetic goals, general health, lifestyle, and what you can expect from this procedure
  • Help you select the size, shape, and type of chin implant that is best for you

In addition to this, your plastic surgeon might suggest that your chin surgery be performed as a standalone procedure, or that it be combined with another cosmetic surgery, such as a rhinoplasty or neck lift.

Complementary Procedures to a Chin Augmentation

While many patients choose to have chin implant surgery alone, just as often chin augmentation will be combined with other procedures for enhanced results.

This includes:

  • Rhinoplasty. This will be performed at the same time as your chin augmentation to improve the facial profile and overall balance of your face.
  • Neck lift. A neck lift or neck liposuction may also be performed at the same time as your chin surgery to improve the definition of the lower third of your face and neck.

If you are wondering whether a rhinoplasty/chin augmentation or neck lift/chin augmentation combination is right for you, make sure to ask your plastic surgeon about it during your consultation.

Cosmetic Chin Surgery: How it Works

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, chin surgery is an excellent way to enhance your facial features and boost your confidence. Here’s what to expect from the procedure:

1. You will be placed under light sedation or local anesthesia, depending on your health, preference, and a number of additional aspects that must be factored in.

2. A small incision will be made under your chin or inside the mouth for implant placement.

3. Your surgeon will then lift the fat, muscle, and skin off of the chin and meticulously position the implant and stitch it into place.

4. The incision will then be closed with tiny sutures.

A chin implant is a relatively simple, straightforward, and quick process, and the procedure typically takes 60 minutes.

Recovering From Chin Implant Surgery

Following your chin implant surgery, you can expect some bruising and swelling, but this will lessen in the coming days and weeks following your procedure. Here are some tips to help move your chin surgery recovery period along smoothly:

  • Apply ice to your chin for 48 hours and sleep with your head elevated.
  • Make sure to rest and give your body time to heal. Most patients return to work and social activities approximately one week after the surgery.
  • Exercise may slowly be resumed after seven days, although contact sports should be avoided for at least four weeks. Only resume strenuous activities and contact sports once your plastic surgeon has said it is safe to do so.

It is extremely important to follow your plastic surgeon’s aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and to prevent complications. If you are unsure about your responsibilities during the recovery period, make sure to address these prior to your procedure.
