Are You a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Chin Surgery?

Are you feeling self-conscious about the appearance of your chin? At our Kelowna private hospital, we offer customized plastic surgery treatments, including chin surgery, to help you achieve all your aesthetic goals.

Chin surgery is a plastic surgery treatment designed to reshape or enhance the size of the chin. It can be done by either inserting an implant or moving/reshaping the existing bones. For many patients, this procedure provides a harmonious balance to the facial features, improving self-confidence and overall appearance.

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, chin surgery can correct a number of facial concerns, including:

  • Natural imbalances of the chin with the jawline
  • Receding chins caused by genetics
  • Weak chins due to excess fatty tissue
  • Shorter necks

Is Chin Surgery Right for Me?

Chin surgery is a highly individualized procedure that may not be suitable for every patient. As with any other procedure, it’s highly advisable to book a consultation with your plastic surgeon before making a decision. They can assess your condition and general health and plan a treatment that is best suited to you.

Chin surgery may be a good option for you if you:

  • Are in good physical shape and general health
  • Don’t have any medical conditions that can impair healing or increase your risk of surgery
  • Have realistic expectations of what chin surgery can accomplish
  • Are a non-smoker or have quit smoking

However, chin surgery may not be a good solution if you are:

  • Prone to bleeding tendencies or have poor healing ability
  • At high risk of having surgical complications
  • Unable to have an anesthetic

What to Think About Before Having Chin Surgery

Undergoing a cosmetic surgery treatment is a serious commitment and there are certain things you can do prior to your procedure that will ensure the best results. This includes:

  • Being as fit as possible to aid in the recovery process
  • Checking with your plastic surgeon about your medications, because some may need to be stopped prior to the surgery
  • Quitting smoking
  • Following a healthy and nutritious diet and staying hydrated

You may also be asked to provide a complete medical history for your plastic surgeon, including indicating any health problems you may have had, any medications you are taking/have taken, and any allergies you have.

Chin Surgery Aftercare: What You Need to Know

After your chin surgery, it’s very normal to experience some swelling and bruising, which can last up to a few weeks. Sleeping with your head elevated will help reduce the swelling.

How long is the recovery period?

Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may need to take a few weeks off work to rest. Avoid any heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, swimming and sports until advised by your plastic surgeon.

Before you undergo your procedure, be sure to ask specific questions about what to expect during your recovery, such as:

  • Where will I be taken after my surgery is completed?
  • What medication will I be prescribed after the surgery?
  • Will I have any dressings or bandages after the procedure? If so, when will they be removed? When can the stitches be removed?
  • When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
  • When do I return for a follow-up appointment?

Will there be scarring after the procedure?

Scars are an inevitable part of any invasive surgery. However, when you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, they can minimize any scarring and keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible by placing incisions in easily hidden sites.

In addition, scars may fade with time and become barely noticeable. If you are prone to scarring, this is something you should discuss with your plastic surgeon beforehand.
