Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to alter the size and shape of a patient’s ears or pin them back if they stick out. It can be done under local anesthetic for older children and adults.
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, ear surgery is a relatively straightforward procedure that involves:
- Making a small incision behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage.
- Removing small pieces of cartilage if necessary.
- Stitching the remaining structure into the desired shape and position.

What is Ear Surgery?
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is often recommended for patients who have misshapen, out of proportion, or out of position ears in relation to the face. This can be a problem that is present since birth or an issue that was caused by an accident or injury.
Who is a Good Candidate For Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery can return your ear to a more normal shape, and fix any congenital defects that are bothersome to a growing child. Even fixing a small problem can have a significant impact on a patient’s self-esteem.
Children are good candidates for plastic surgery if:
- They are five years old or older when the cartilage of the ear is stable enough to be fixed.
- They are healthy and don’t suffer from chronic health conditions that could inhibit healing.
- They can understand instructions and be cooperative, as the healing process requires adherence to rules regarding aftercare.
Teenagers and adults are good candidates for ear surgery if they:
- Are healthy and don’t suffer from any chronic health conditions that would impede healing.
- Don’t smoke. Smoking can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of surgery.
- Can identify specific goals for the ear surgery.
- Have an optimistic outlook on what to expect from the procedure.
How Long Does it Take to Recover From Cosmetic Ear Surgery?
After an otoplasty, patients are excited to see their results, but before you can enjoy your beautiful, new ears, there is a recovery period that you must go through. While this period is relatively simple, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s after-care instructions for the best possible outcome.
Ear Surgery Recovery Timeline
Once your ear surgery is complete, your head will be wrapped in heavily-padded cotton bandages. After a few days, this will be replaced by a lighter bandage, and approximately 1 week after surgery, all bandages will be removed.
Some temporary side effects you may also experience, include swelling, discomfort, and itchy skin.
A general recovery timeline includes:
- Bandages are completely removed after one week.
- A special headband will be worn for several weeks after your procedure.
- You can resume normal activities 7 days after your procedure.
- Children can return to school after one week.
- Adults can return to work after several days.
- A full otoplasty recovery takes approximately 6 weeks.
