Everything You Need To Know About Chin Surgery

Regardless of age, diet, and health, sometimes certain areas of our bodies can accumulate stubborn fat that can be difficult to lose. Many of us would like to see a streamlined profile when we look in the mirror, but sometimes excess chin fat can take all the attention away from the features on your face that you love. A double chin can result from a variety of factors including anatomy and airway positioning. Plastic surgeons use a variety of procedures to remove double chin, the most common one being liposuction which removes the excess fat and sculpts the chin and neck contour. This article will discuss everything you need to know about chin liposuction to help you determine if the procedure is right for you.

What Is Chin Liposuction?

During a chin liposuction procedure (also known as submental liposuction), your plastic surgeon will administer local anesthesia to your neck and chin area before making two small incisions under your chin crease. Then using a thin tube (known as a cannula) your plastic surgeon will begin to suction excess fat from the chin. Once the procedure is complete, your surgeon will stitch the incisions closed. Liposuction of the neck and chin can be performed as an in-office procedure for most patients and is usually completed in less than an hour.

Chin Liposuction Recovery

After your procedure, your plastic surgeon will go over the recovery process with you. Expect to take at least one week off of work to allow your body to rest and heal.  You can expect mild swelling and bruising that will last at least 1-3 weeks. You will also be sent home with a chin compression garment which you will have to wear around the clock for the first week and then only at night for the last two to three weeks. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise for at least 2-3 weeks after your liposuction procedure or until the bruising is resolved.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Chin Liposuction?

Good candidates for chin liposuction have enough skin elasticity to heal and bounce back into its newly contoured shape after the fat is removed. People over the age of forty looking to have a chin liposuction procedure may also require a neck lift to remove excess skin. During your initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will assess your skin to determine if it has enough elasticity for the liposuction procedure. If your skin is not elastic enough, your doctor will recommend other options such as a neck lift to give you your desired results. The procedure is also not recommended for obese individuals. Chin liposuction can only remove superficial fat. For someone who is very overweight, there is usually a deeper layer of fat (subplatysmal fat) that liposuction cannot address.
