  • 9 Simple Ways to Ensure a Quick and Safe Recovery From Your Ear Surgery
Are you going to undergo ear surgery? Here are some tips on how to ensure a quick and safe recovery from your otoplasty and get the most satisfactory results.

Ear surgery, also referred to as an otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to alter the size and shape of a patient’s ears. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon, an otoplasty is a safe and effective way to restructure your ear to create a more harmonious balance to your facial appearance.

Your plastic surgeon may recommend cosmetic ear surgery if you have:

  • Protruding ears
  • A misshapen ear due to injury
  • A defect in the structure of your ear
  • A desire to change the position of your ears

Your Complete Guide to Ear Surgery Recovery

An otoplasty is a relatively simple and safe procedure and it’s often done on an outpatient basis, meaning that you don’t need to stay overnight at the hospital.

However, this cosmetic procedure does come with a significant recovery period and it’s important to follow your plastic surgeon’s after-care instructions to lower your surgical risks and ensure the most aesthetically pleasing results.

What to Expect Immediately After an Otoplasty

Once your surgery is completed, your ears will be individually covered with small dressings, which are typically worn for seven days.

Your plastic surgeon may advise you to wear a tennis headband at nighttime (for at least 2 months) and while playing any contact sports. This is to prevent your ears from being pushed forward while they’re still setting.

During this period, you should be aware of several things, such as:

  • Typically, you’ll experience some discomfort following surgery. Your surgeon may prescribe some paracetamol to relieve your pain but you must AVOID ASPIRIN at this time.
  • After one week, your dressings will be removed. You may notice some bruising and swelling, but this is only temporary and will resolve within 14 days. You’ll notice some improvement in the appearance of your ears.
  • You may experience some numbness in the treatment area, but this is only temporary.
  • Some patients may experience a mild infection around the stitch line. If you experience this, you must make a follow up appointment with your plastic surgeon so they can resolve the issue quickly for you.

9 Tips For a Faster and Safer Otoplasty Recovery Period

The recovery period following an otoplasty is an important part of the procedure and for ensuring optimal results. Getting enough rest and following the below tips will ensure this period goes as smoothly and quickly as possible.

  • Do not carry heavy items or bend over for at least 3 weeks
  • Keep the affect ear dry and don’t wash your hair until the external wound has healed
  • Don’t play a wind instrument or blow your nose too hard for the first month
  • Avoid swimming until your plastic surgeon advises it’s safe to do so
  • Avoid lying or sleeping on the affected side to avoid any pain or discomfort
  • Keep your head cool, especially while you still have the bandages
  • Keep your head elevated to minimize any swelling
  • Apply any ointment or medicine given to you for your scars. This will allow them to heal properly and ensure they won’t be visible.
  • Always be patient with yourself and keep realistic expectations of the outcome of your ear surgery.

If you experience any complications or have any questions regarding your recovery, you must talk to your plastic surgeon as they will be able to offer expert advice regarding your specific concerns and needs.
