Choosing the right implant is a crucial part of your breast augmentation surgery. Here are 3 tips on how to make the best decision when it comes to your aesthetic goals.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Canada.

When performed by board-certified plastic surgeon, this surgery is a safe and effective way to:

  • improve breast asymmetry
  • correct volume loss in breasts (whether due to age, pregnancy, or weight loss)

Choosing the Right Implants For Your Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses saline or silicone implants to help you achieve the breast size you want. For the best, and most natural, results, you should work closely with your surgeon to choose the correct type and size of implant for your unique body shape.

5 Factors That Will Play a Role in The Decision-Making Process

  • The size and shape of your body
  • Your natural breast size and shape
  • How active you are
  • Your lifestyle
  • The amount and integrity of natural breast tissue you have

Your doctor will measure your breast and chest size, and take into consideration your height and weight, to help you make the right decision about why type and size of implant you should opt for.

3 Tips For Choosing The Right Breast Implant

Choosing the right implant for your breast augmentation surgery is one of the most important decisions you’ll make and ensures the safest, most natural results.

Here are 3 factors to consider when selecting your implant:

1. Size

While breast augmentation is for patients who want to enhance their breast size, you have to keep in mind your unique figure and needs. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Body type - Avoid large implants if you are a lean person, as this may lead to implant rippling.
  • Body shape - While some women with a strong build can easily carry large-sized breasts, many suffer from back pain if their implants are too big.
  • Future pregnancy - During your pregnancy, your breasts may expand a few sizes so the desired implant size should ideally be chosen after you have no plans for future pregnancies.

2. Material

Implants are either made from silicone or saline. Both have their advantages/disadvantages so the choice will mainly come down to your individual needs and goals.

Saline

These implants are made of a silicone shell that is filled (at the time of surgery) with salt water. Some of the pros and cons include:

Pros:

  • Require only a small incision.
  • They can be filled to match your exact and unique profile.
  • They don’t pose a health risk if they rupture

Cons:

  • They have a less natural feel than silicone implants.
  • There is a higher risk of implant rippling.
  • Higher rate of downward displacement

Silicone

Silicone implants are made of a solid silicone shell which are filled with a cohesive silicone gel. Here are some of the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • They have a more natural look and feel than saline implants.
  • They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit your individual needs.
  • They are less prone to rippling.

Cons:

  • They’re more expensive.
  • They’re only FDA approved for women over the age of 22.
  • If a silicone implant ruptures, it can lead to health issues such as breast cancer or connective tissue disorder.

3. Profile

This refers to the distance a breast implant will come forward from your chest wall. A low profile implant will be flat, while a higher profile will create a more prominent appearance.

To help choose which profile is right for you, your plastic surgeon will consider:

  • the existing shape of your body and size of your breasts
  • your breast width
  • your aesthetic goals
