Cosmetic surgery, such as facelifts and neck lifts, are common, safe, and time-tested ways to eliminate signs of aging and rejuvenate your facial appearance. Some of the concerns cosmetic face surgery can address include:
- Sagging skin
- Midface drooping
- Unwanted wrinkles and fine lines
- Loose neck skin
- Double chin
- Nasolabial folds

Thanks to incredible advancements in cosmetic treatments, more and more patients are turning towards non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as Botox, Restylane, and Soft Lift, instead of surgical face surgeries, to achieve their goals in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Surgical vs Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation: Which is Right For You?
With the rise of minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, such as Botox and Juvederm, patients now no longer have to resort to cosmetic face surgery to achieve certain aesthetic and anti-aging goals. However, with the wide variety of choices, it has become harder to determine which procedure is right for you.
As you consider your options, understanding a few general principles can help simplify your decision:
1. Surgical and Non SUrgical Treatments Do Different Things
It’s important to understand that surgical and non-surgical procedures sometimes do different things, but they also do the same things in different ways. For example, deepening of nasolabial folds can be softened by dermal fillers, such as Juvederm.
However, cosmetic surgery can also diminish the folds. Often the most dramatic improvement to the appearance of the folds is when a facelift is combined with fat grafting.
2. Non-Surgical Treatments are Temporary
While non-surgical or minimally invasive treatments are easy to undergo and recover from, their results are temporary and the treatments will have to be repeated to maintain the effect. However, surgical procedures tend to be much longer lasting, or even permanent, and may never need to be repeated.
3. There are Some Concerns Non-Surgical Treatments Can Adequately Correct
While non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments are highly effective, there are some aging changes that they simply cannot adequately correct. This includes:
- Significant jowling: If you have developed significant jowling, only surgery can reliably address this issue.
- Low brow position: If your brow position is quite low, or there is a significant amount of loose skin on the upper eyelids, only eyelid and brow surgery can reliably reposition the brow or eliminate this loose skin.
- Skin laxity in the neck: If there is significant skin laxity in the neck, minimally invasive treatments cannot fully correct the looseness and a neck lift will most likely be required for full correction.
Surgical and Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments Represent a Continuum of Effectiveness
Surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments represent a continuum of effectiveness. Chemical peels, facial lasers, or injectables can do a great job if the degree of skin changes and wrinkling is relatively limited. More aggressive lasers or peels can produce more dramatic results when the skin has more established aging. For very severe changes, surgical treatments will most likely be recommended.
If you are older and have more advanced aging concerns, then cosmetic face surgery is most likely the answer for you. However, if you are in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, very often the non-invasive treatments such as Botox and fillers are the best strategy.
