What is Pre-Operative Care and Why Is It Important?

Whether it’s cosmetic or general surgery, pre-operative care is the preparation and management of the patient prior to the procedure. During this time, great emphasis is placed on:

  • Informing and educating the patient about their procedure and showing them the guidelines regarding the surgery.
  • Assessing and correcting and psychological and physiological issues that may increase surgical risk.
  • Demonstrating exercises that will benefit the patient after their surgery.
  • Planning for discharge and any anticipated lifestyle changes due to the surgery.

Communication is of Utmost Importance

Patients who are both physically and psychologically prepared for their surgery often tend to enjoy better surgical results. That’s why pre-operative care is extremely important prior to any surgical procedure, however minor or major it is.

Good communication between all members of the health care team, including the patient and surgeon, is key to ensuring that you are well prepared and ready to undergo a surgical treatment.

6 Easy to Follow Pre-Operative Care Tips To Follow Prior to Surgery

Whether you’re undergoing a foot procedure or a cosmetic surgery treatment, pre-operative care is a very important aspect of your treatment. Following your plastic surgeon’s pre-operative care instructions is crucial if you want to achieve the safest and best results possible.

Before undergoing any surgery, here are 6 simple pre-operative care tips you should follow:

  1. Stick to a healthy diet. Good nutrition and a healthy diet is essential for a successful surgery. In the weeks prior to your surgery, make sure you eat well and avoid any crash dieting, high alcohol intake and overeating.
  1. Exercise. Staying fit is an important factor in your overall health and well-being. The better your health, the less likely you are to experience any surgical risk.
  1. Quit smoking. Smoking can greatly impair your ability to heal. All patients must be smoke-free for at least one month prior to the surgery. This includes avoiding the use of nicotine patches or any nicotine based products such as vape cigarettes or gum.
  1. Talk to your plastic surgeon about your medications. If you are taking any medications, such as Aspirin, you MUST talk to your surgeon about it first. Any products containing Aspirin can increase your risk of bleeding and other complications.
  1. Keep your lifestyle healthy. In the weeks before your surgery, maintain the best of health and hygiene. If you do experience any sudden illness or changes in your health, you must tell your plastic surgeon straight away.
  1. Plan, plan, plan. Recovery is an important part of any surgery so schedule some time off and plan for any support you may require at home for housework, child care, and/or grocery shopping. You’ll also need a responsible family member or friend to take you to and from the hospital.
