Common Types of Hand/Wrist Surgery

Many common problems of the hand, such as arthritis or abnormal enlargements of the bone, can cause you pain, discomfort and interfere with your daily living.

At our Kelowna private hospital, our plastic surgeons have the expertise in a wide range of hand/wrist surgeries including:

General Hand Surgery

1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when pressure is put on the medial nerve as it passes through your wrist, under the carpal tunnel ligament.

This results in numbness in your fingers. Surgery is generally recommended to ease the pressure on the nerve. This is done by splitting the carpal tunnel ligament under local anaesthetic.

2. Dupuytren's Contracture

This condition is caused by tissue forming in the palm of your hand and fingers. It is often painless, but can form bands which make your fingers curl into your palm.

A plastic surgeon can remove this tissue and release your fingers. The surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis.

3. Trigger Finger Release
If you have trigger finger, the affected finger may bend normally but becomes stuck in a curled position.

While the most common treatments including a split or a local injection, in some cases, you may require a minor day-case operation to open the tunnel and free the tendon.

General Wrist Surgery

1. Wrist Fusion

Your plastic surgeon may recommend a wrist fusion if your wrist is badly damaged. This is where the bones in your wrist are fixed to the bones in your hand. This surgery generally reduces pain and increases strength, but usually stops your wrist moving up and down.

2. Wrist Arthroscopy

Wrist arthroscopy is a surgery that allows a plastic surgeon to see the inside of a joint. It’s performed when a patient sustains an injury such as a fall or twisting of the wrist and is experiencing pain, clicking or swelling.

A wrist arthroscopy can be used to help:

  • Align wrist fractures
  • Remove ganglions of the wrist
  • Wash out infection
  • Remove excess joint lining associated with inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
