Pros and Cons of Open and Closed Nasal Surgery

Are you unhappy with the size or shape of your nose? Our customized nasal surgery procedures can help you achieve a balanced and proportionally-pleasing facial appearance.

Your nose is a central feature of your face and how it looks can determine how you feel about your overall appearance. Rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, is designed to change the size, shape, and position of the nose, to help patients feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance.

A nasal surgery can address a number of concerns:

  • a nose profile with a visible depression or hump on the bridge;
  • a nasal tip that is disproportionately large, bulbous, upturned, or hooked (turned down);
  • wide, large, or upturned nostrils;
  • nasal asymmetry.

Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty: Which is Right For You?

The purpose of nasal surgery is to ultimately improve the nose both aesthetically and functionally. Plastic surgeons will usually adopt either an open or closed rhinoplasty approach. Understanding the difference between the two can help you make a more informed decision about which one is right for you.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is performed after an incision is made in the columella, which is the tissue that separates the nostrils. Next, your plastic surgeon folds up the nasal skin in order to be able to view and access the lower part of the nasal skeleton. Some doctors point out that with this direct visibility and surgical access, diagnostic accuracy could be improved.

Benefits

An open rhinoplasty carried out by a qualified plastic surgeon:

  • minimises the likelihood of distortion to the nasal cartilage;
  • allows for more dramatic revision of the shape and proportion of the nose;
  • It can be less traumatic to the nose because the surgeon has more room to work;
  • Requires less modification to other internal nasal structures;

Risks

Even when carried out correctly, a rhinoplasty, like all plastic surgeries, may have some complications. These can include:

  • It can lead to more noticeable scarring than the closed rhinoplasty technique;
  • recovery may be more extensive and complex;
  • this procedure requires the patient to spend more time in surgery.

Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty involves the plastic surgeon performing the procedure entirely inside the nose, without interfering with the columella. Without the access created by the incision in the columella, this surgery is more demanding. It is always a good idea to choose a surgeon with extensive experience and skill for this type of procedure.

Benefits

Many Kelowna nasal surgery patients choose to opt for a closed rhinoplasty procedure.

This procedure's benefits include:

  • a faster, less-invasive operation than an open rhinoplasty;
  • a shorter, easier recovery time, with fewer complications;
  • no visible scarring, due to the fact that there is no incision in the columella.

Risks

Although there are many upsides to a closed rhinoplasty procedure, our Kelowna nasal surgery team always wants patients to be fully aware of a procedure's downsides. Patients should be aware that:

  • It is a more difficult approach to rhinoplasty and requires a very skilled nasal surgeon;
  • it is limited in the scope of the revisions it can make to the nose;
  • it can also be more traumatic if the surgeon is indelicate or tries to make revisions that are too significant.
