What is Facial Fat Grafting?
Facial fat grafting is an innovative and safe procedure that uses a patient’s own fat to rejuvenate certain areas of the face.
Fat grafting of the face is often recommended to patients who:
- Have facial areas that have lost volume or appear sunken
- Are looking for more permanent anti-aging results than those provided by Botox or Juvederm
- Wish to fill in any depressions or improve the appearance of facial scars
- Are looking for dramatic, yet natural looking, anti-aging results
Not sure if your face will benefit from a fat grafting procedure?
During an in-depth consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon, they will discuss your skin type, medical history and aesthetic goals to help determine if a fat grafting surgery is a safe and effective choice for you. BOOK NOW >
Recovering from a Facial Fat Grafting Surgery
A fat grafting surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be performed using local anesthesia, and typically takes 1 hour to complete. Once you are home from your face grafting surgery, here are some things you can expect:
Week 1
There will be swelling and bruising during the first week after your fat grafting procedure, both in the face and the area from which the fat was harvested.
To ease any swelling and pain, you should:
- Keep the treatment area elevated
- Use an ice compress
- Take any pain medication that has been prescribed by your plastic surgeon
Week 2
The reduction in bruising and swelling happens between the 7th-10th day after the fat grafting procedure. By the second week, most of the bruising will have gone away, although you will still be left with a slight swelling.
While many patients feel ready to return to work after one week, every individual’s recovery time will vary, and it’s best to check with your plastic surgeon before resuming your normal activities.
NOTE: If you have excessive pain, redness, pus, or other symptoms that don't appear to be normal, consult your surgeon immediately
7 Tips for Recovering From a Face Grafting Procedure
While a facial fat grafting procedure is a safe and effective treatment, how satisfied you are with the results will largely depend on your recovery period.
Here are some tips to ensure the safest and best outcome from your procedure:
- Don’t move or massage the treated area for a few days after the fat grafting procedure
- Don’t smoke
- Sleep on your back and keep your face from pushing into your pillow
- Avoid any strenuous activity until your doctor advises you that it’s safe to do so
- Stay hydrated
- Keep a stable weight, as weight loss can reduce the amount of fat in your face
- Add more healthy fats to your diet (e.g. avocados, salmon, almonds & coconut oil)
