Right and Wrong Reasons For Seeking the Services of a Plastic Surgeon

Prior to undergoing any cosmetic surgery, you will have to have an in-depth consultation with your plastic surgeon. At some point during this meeting, you will have to explain your motivation for pursuing cosmetic treatment. This answer will be taken extremely seriously and your surgeon will use it to determine your suitability.

To help you prepare, here are some of the right and wrong reasons for seeking the services of a plastic surgeon:

Acceptable Reasons for Pursuing Cosmetic Surgery

  • You want to correct a flaw that has always concerned you. Correctly a physical flaw is a common and acceptable reason to pursue cosmetic treatment. This could include a crooked nose, small/asymmetrical breasts, sagging skin due to age, pregnancy, or weight loss, or a protruding chin.

  • You want a more youthful appearance. Many people seek the services of a plastic surgeon to minimize signs of aging and restore a more youthful appearance. Your surgeon may suggest procedures such as a facelift or necklift, or even non-surgical treatments such as Botox or Juvederm.

  • You want to feel comfortable in your skin. One of the biggest benefits of cosmetic surgery is that it can improve your physical appearance and boost your self confidence. If you’ve done your research and truly believe that changing an aspect of your appearance will make you happier, while having realistic expectations of the surgical outcome, then cosmetic surgery could be right for you.

Unacceptable Reasons for Pursuing Cosmetic Surgery

  • You want to impress someone else. A good plastic surgeon will tell you that undergoing cosmetic treatment is a personal choice. If you are facing pressure to have this procedure from your spouse, friends, or a family member, then you may not be a good candidate for plastic surgery.

  • You think plastic surgery will make you happier. While wanting to correct a perceived flaw is a valid reason to go under the knife, you must not go into the surgery with unrealistic expectations of how your life will change as a result of altering your appearance. If you’re struggling with depression or body dysmorphia, then you must work on achieving a healthy mental outlook first, before opting for any cosmetic treatment.

  • You want ‘revenge plastic surgery’. If you are looking to enhance your looks to save a relationship or make your former partner jealous, upset, or second-guess their choice, then this is not an acceptable reason to pursue cosmetic surgery. It’s important to remember that you cannot control how other people feel - you can only control your emotions and strive to be the best version of yourself.
