Chin Liposuction - What To Expect
As people grow older they lose the elasticity and consistency of the skin on their face. Aging can cause a sagging jawline and fatty deposits under your chin. Chin liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure to restore a strong contoured jawline and a smooth lean neck.
Chin liposuction involves the surgical removal of fat from jowls, chin, and neck recapturing a more youthful appearance and bringing harmony and balance to your face. The following article will provide patients with a summary of a Chin Liposuction procedure and what you should know if you are considering this procedure for yourself.

Options for Improving the Appearance of Your Neck and Chin
Chin Liposuction: plastic surgery procedure aimed at extracting excess fat tissue that accumulates to form a double chin. This is the least invasive type of chin surgery because only a small incision is required to fit a cannula subcutaneously (below your skin). Patients will usually receive a local anesthesia to numb the affected areas, with an option for general anesthesia depending on the extent of the surgery required.
Neck Lift: also known as a lower rhytidectomy, this process involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding neck region resulting in the appearance of a contoured and well-defined chin area. This procedure is the most invasive because the incisions are made with the intention of removing skin tissue. Patients will almost always be sedated under general anesthesia for this operation. This day surgery usually takes several hours.
Submentoplasty: this technique is the most common because it combines elements of Chin Liposuction and a neck lift giving optimal results. This is ideal for patients with fat accumulation along the jawline that cannot be reduced by weight loss and fairly resilient and flexible skin. This surgery typically lasts less than an hour and is less invasive than a Neck Lift because the incisions required are more comparable to those needed for a Chin Liposuction.
Not all patients are ideal candidates for Chin Liposuction. Those with poor skin elasticity may be better suited for a Neck Lift procedure. Consult with your surgeon about which type of treatment is ideal for your needs.
How Should I Prepare Before Surgery?
A few weeks before your scheduled surgery day, there are some best practices you can implement that may reduce the chance of complications arising during your operation. Read more about the pre-surgery instructions we recommend before plastic surgery.
First, stop smoking up to three weeks before. Inhalation of smoke can damage the cells and tissues surrounding the surgery’s target area. Moreover, it can lengthen the time required to heal and even prevent full recovery from surgery. Stopping smoking can give you the best chance at the surgery without complications and full recovery.
Next, avoid or reschedule any dental work before your chin surgery. Leave at least 6 weeks of time between your most recent orthodontist visit and your scheduled chin surgery appointment. Having a dental procedure done shortly before a chin lift can dramatically increase your risk of unwanted infection in sensitive areas of the face and mouth region. If there is no way to reasonably reschedule your medical appointments, discuss the antibiotic options available to mitigate the risk of contamination.
Finally, discuss with your doctor whether any medication or prescriptions you’re taking may interact with the anesthesia or pain treatment used during your chin lift procedure. Further laboratory tests or blood work may be required to confirm any drug interactions. In preparation for your procedure, your medical team will further elaborate on any medication requirements or restrictions applicable to your double chin surgery.
What Are The Risks Of Chin Liposuction?
Like with any surgical procedure, there are risks to be aware of. The most obvious risk is that you may not feel satisfied with the aesthetic outcome of the double chin surgery. Choose a reputable, certified surgeon who has completed many Chin Liposuctions to ensure you will have the desired results. Meet with your doctor to review the outcomes of their past surgeries and review patient testimonials to pick the best surgeon for you.
Two other risks to consider:
- Reaction to Anesthesia: Some patients do experience an allergy or an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Speak with your surgeon about prior experience with sedation and any family members who have had adverse reactions.
- Scarring and Infection: As with any invasive procedure there is always a risk of infection. Your surgeon will ensure that this risk is mitigated and you can help by following all post-surgical recommendations for the care and cleaning of your wound. Your surgeon will be well-practiced at positioning incisions for low visibility but follow all pre and post-surgery practices to minimize scarring and ensure optimal outcomes.
