Breast Revision Surgery 101
Who Needs Breast Revision Surgery?
Some women are not happy with the initial results of their breast implant surgery, or complications occur resulting in changes in the appearance of their breasts. Often, the goal is to improve the appearance of the breasts and/ or performing implant revision, which may include:
- Concurrent breast lift or reduction
- Repositioning the implant to it’s correct position
- Reducing pain from capsular contracture (when the bodies immune system reacts to foreign objects in the body i.e the breast implant causes scar tissue around the implant)
- Concerns about rupture or migration of the implant
- Desire to change from saline to silicone implants or vice versa
- Changes in breast tissue caused by skin stretching or weight loss/gain
- Breast implant deflation and sagging
Breast Revision Prep
Before considering breast revision surgery, it is important that you first consult a plastic surgeon. During your consultation, be prepared to answer questions about your previous surgery or surgeries, and to discuss your concerns. Your plastic surgeon will then assess your implants, evaluate your health status, discuss your options for revision, and recommend a course of treatment. In preparation for the surgery, ensure that you follow your plastic surgeons preoperative care instructions regarding, rest, fitness, diet, and medications. A healthy surgery and a fast, successful recovery starts with being in good physical and emotional health before the surgery.
Breast Revision Recovery
The recovery from breast revision surgery will be similar to your initial breast augmentation surgery. The recovery may be shorter than what you experienced during your initial surgery, however, you can still expect to be a little swollen and sore. Your incisions will be dressed and you will be briefed on your postoperative care instructions. Most patients can return to their daily routines after a week or two, but vigorous activities should be avoided for at least three weeks. Your scars will continue to soften and fade for up to a year following your surgery.
